Project Information: While 8th grade advanced students may choose to complete a National History Day project as an independent study extracurricular activity, they will all be required to complete a book project as 8th graders. Students will be provided with a project information sheets for the different parts of the project when each part is assigned. Due dates for each part will be listed on the information sheets.
The main elements of the reading project include reading a historical fiction novel on the same topic of a historical event from American history (1607- 1870s). The book must be appropriate grade level and at least 200 pages. It cannot be an alternate history book, as these are not historical fiction. It also should not be a collection of stories. The novel must include one plot line that continues through the entire book.
Once the books have been read, a scholarly research of primary and secondary sources on the main topic of the first book or of some aspect covered in the book will begin. Finally, a research theme will be written based on all the readings will be turned in and the research will be presented to the class.
See the bottom of this page for directions sheets that can be downloaded.
Additional files will be added when they are passed out in class.
