Why study history? It's the story of us... the human race, and it is a remarkable, fascinating story. If you don't see the relevance of studying history, look around. History explains how we got to where we are today. It is our story of everything that was, is, and will be. Yes, ...will be. Even you are making history right now! It is the loves, the heartaches, the good, and the bad. It is the about our cultures and civilizations, our eras and events, and our inventions and actions. And knowing history helps us learn from the mistakes of the past, which is key to making a better world.

What strands of social studies are taught during the school year? The state of Ohio currently has four conceptual social studies strands that guide instruction: Geography, Government, Economics, and History. Social Studies Skills and Methods are now embedded into the four strands which include historical thinking (and using primary sources), spatial thinking, civic participation, economic decision making, and financial literacy. However, many students learn in sixth grade about G.R.A.P.E.S. This is an easy way to remember the strands and sub-strands under which all class content and skills fall. The letters stand for: G = geography, R = religion, A = achievements, P = politics, E = economics, and S = social structure. In class, each of the strands and sub-strands will be repeated for each civilization studied in 7th grade and for each period of U.S. history studied in 8th grade. A good rule of thumb when studying is... if it falls under one of the strands or sub-strands, it's important to know and master.
