High School Requirements
New graduation requirements for Ohio social studies included in HB 367 were signed by Governor Kasich in December 2014.
As part of the new law, graduation requirements will include one-half unit in American history, one-half unit of American government,
two units (beginning with students who enter ninth grade for the first time on or after July 1, 2017) of instruction of which at least one-
half unit includes instruction in world history and civilizations. These requirements total to three years of history study at the high school
level. Content will be assessed through the Ohio Graduation Exam.
High School Recommendation
In the past, Westerville City Schools has offered honors history classes to freshmen and sophomores with AP (advanced placement)
classes being reserved for juniors and seniors. However, this option is changing. Freshmen and sophomores will also be able to take AP
history classes. While the criteria for placement in AP classes has not been finalized, neither has the recommendation process. In the past,
teacher recommendation for honors history included: an A average in the previous year's class, strong reading and writing skills, strong
participation shown, and strong interest in the history. Recommendations for AP classes will most likely be more stringent. However, students
can self-select to take these classes if so desired.
